The context of the history of the Beast of Gévaudan is that it is one of the last acts in a world destined to disappear in the Revolution.
The protagonists in this collection are still largely from the ranks of the King’s army, employees from his estate, civil servants in the royal administration of France or prelates close to power. Everyone tried to face the problem that the monster posed with its crimes, without understanding that, in some ways, they had perhaps magnified it themselves.
This armorial evokes not only family heraldry, but also the King’s Estate, its organization and the state of its armies, all under the omnipresent shadow of the Beast.
